finishing ikat, Building Box

The ikat warp is finally off the loom! I shouldn't even say finally...it really wasn't that long, considering all the things I juggle. I think I started weaving in March? sometime this past spring.  I'm excited to spend some time with it and decide where to cut it into sections.

The other pictures here show the box I'm making for my piece "Storm Lifting" so it will transport safely to the upcoming Craft Forms 2018 exhibit. Still have to finish that.
I'm also in the last stages of stitching on the 28x22 piece - Need to finish it up by the 14th or so of November so it can be shown at Furchgott Sourdiffe Gallery's winter exhibit...Here's a close-up photo showing some of the colors I'm using in the hand stitching....

Will keep you posted - Lots of good things happening!

Till then, I'll leave you with a 'picture perfect' fall day in Vermont!

The photo is a detail shot of an outdoor installation by Cristina Salusti and Jeffrey Simpson.
The installation was part of the annual Kent Museum exhibit.

This year's show was called "Backstory". It's always an amazing group of artists, in a beautiful setting in the countryside not too far from town where we live. The curators are phenominal...The show always runs for about a month in the fall - so mark your calendar for next year and plan a visit! You won't regret it!

Enjoy the rest of your autumn, and get ready because Winter is Coming!

Projects in Progress...

Here we are, already into October. Fall is my favorite season for sure, especially in New England! Took some recent photos during autumnal walks in our neck of the woods....here's just a couple:
Back to the studio work: the ikat warp that is almost finished being woven. It's the home stretch!

For the wefts, I've used up some yarns from my stash basket that I've had for awhile; I don't remember when or where I bought them. It's great to finally match them up with where they've been waiting to go for so long. There was a nice space-dyed what looks like silk/wool combo in blues/greens, a soft wool in pale lavender and another in a wonderful orange color. Transitioning from one color section to the other has been fun too - Not sure I mastered the subtle gradations I can get in dyes, but it's a different process so I'm not going to be hard on myself. It depends a lot on how much yarn you have to play with...

weaving the final section of ikat warp
There's about six or seven sections so far? and this is probably the last section I can get out of it -  the shed opening is getting to be awkward/smaller as the warp is running out...I'm not sure how much I'll get out of it for the last one, but I'll try to get a similar size to the others. We'll see!
Below here are some images of the new mixed media textile/painting I started recently. I'm excited by how it's shaping up.
After getting the first layers down and decided, I then decided with what fabric(s) to layer on top...

...Then I gathered some possible choices for threads to hand-stitch with -- it's a mixture of cottons, silks, and linens...I think I've honed in on the plan, so now I just have to get stitching on it!!!
It's been really super-busy at work lately, and I wish it weren't because my brain has a hard time relaxing into the flow for my own creativity / shifting gears as it were.

But that's life isn't it - having to juggle? Seeking balance is the way to go I guess...not easy, but something to strive for...

Anyway, in other exciting news that I'll post to my News & Events page soon = My piece "Storm Lifting" has been accepted into Craft Forms 2018! Check that link for more info - I don't think they've listed the artists there yet, but nevertheless, It's a prestigious show in the Philadelphia area, so I'm really excited to share my work with that audience again soon :)

On that positive note, I'll leave you with a beautiful photo - Courtesy of my very talented partner, Jim Gallagher...
:) Happy Autumn from Vermont!
