Karen Henderson at
The Shirley A. Jefferson Gallery April 7 - July 1, 2024 My worlds have collided! For many years as a creative person, I juggled my art with two or more part time jobs, with two of them being my freelance design work and my farmer's market art business. But since 2017, I've been balancing my art making with full-time work as a creative designer in the marketing and communications department at VLGS. It's exciting to have this opportunity to share my fiber and mixed media works with my other world. The show includes an interactive project, where the community has been invited to weave together on a simple frame tapestry loom. As folks contribute, the art will come to life! When the piece is finished, it will hang in the school's Multicultural Center at Deering House on Chelsea Street in 'downtown' SoRo Vermont (that's local-speak for South Royalton). I'll add progress and/or finished images of the VLGS CommUnity Weaving Project as it grows to my Blog, so stay tuned! |

Water Works
October 15 - November 30, 2018
My work "In Weather on Water" has been included in a group exhibit at the Maryland Federation of Art's online Curve Gallery. Juror Melissa Staiger, Education Director of Trestle Workshops, writes:
The work chosen for this digital exhibition was based on “water depicted as the primary force, object, or consequences”. You will view various mediums such as drawing, watercolor, acrylic paint, oil paint, sculpture, and printmaking.
I wanted the show to represent the range of mediums entered. I looked for line, composition, color, texture, and feeling in each work. I asked myself and “does this artwork reflect the mysterious qualities of water” or “is water seen as an elemental force” and “how far did the artist push our understanding with their vision”.

Juror's Choice Award
Exciting News!
My piece "Wishing While Fishing" has received a Juror's Choice Award in MFA’s (Maryland Federation of Art) Stormy Weather Exhibit.
Juror Dean Dalfonzo wrote: Looking at all the amazing work submitted to Stormy Weather, I was struck by
the range of emotions represented by artists responding to nature and severe weather. The energy, vulnerability, beauty and hope we all feel is there in many diverse forms and media. From poignant photography, thought-provoking found creations, and skillfully executed drawings and paintings, it was a challenge to choose any standouts. As if considering the aftermath of a storm, I looked at all the works and then put the images away. I thought about what was left, and the pieces that had left an impression on my personal memory. I tried to pick from the range of media and artistic expression equally and therefore I wasn’t able to give awards to many pieces I thought were outstanding. It was a true pleasure to be introduced to so many wonderful artists.
In looking at “Wishing While Fishing” by Karen Henderson, I could almost feel the droplets
of rain and hear “pitter patter” as they hit the water.

BIG, BIG NEWS ~ A NEW
STUDIO SPACE!
This winter I moved into a new Studio space at Studio Place Arts (SPA) in Barre, Vermont.
They have three floors that include exhibit space and many artist studios. Lots of creative energy and talent there!!!
My studio is a beautiful space! with bright but soft light from the three big windows...and a storage closet and nice messy work sink. YAY! for work sinks!!!
Am hopeful the productive-art-making-mojo from the previous talented
artists who worked in the space will transfer to me there...(most recent folks in the space were Matthew Monk, and prior to that Maggie Neale)
So, I can feel my inspiration and motivation to work is starting to get stronger, and I can see this new space is really helping...
Check out my Blog to read about my creative journey-ing, and see pics of different works in progress...
If you'd like to set up a Studio Visit, please get in touch HERE!

IN THE DETAILS is an exhibition catalog featuring the mesmerizing, complex artwork of seventeen artists: David Ambrose, Emily Barletta, Mel Bernstine, Halsey Chait, Cathy Cone, Jonathan Cowan, Denise Driscoll, Lori Ellison, Patricia Fabricant, Jeanne Heifetz, Karen Henderson, Taney Roniger, Jessica Rosner, Gowri Savoor, Lynda Schlosberg, Oriane Stender, and Carleen Zimbalatti.
The labor-intensive quality of their work invites the viewer into an inner world that is both tranquil and multidimensional. The exhibition, In the Details, gives weight to each artist’s meticulous mark-making vocabulary and process. Inch by inch, through skill and craftsmanship, the significance of detail emerges from the iterations and interlacing of small basic elements, creating evocative compositions that maintain a balance between the tangible and a seemingly infinite space.

An artist feature article in
New England Home Magazine
July/August 2017 issue
(see pages 42, 44 & 45 in the link)
I'm so honored to be featured in the current New England Home Magazine!
Even though my home growing up was in Pennsylvania, the New England region has always called to me.....which is why, after almost ten (very quick) years, I have come to realize that Vermont has really become my home!
New England Home magazine is a journal that features fine design, architecture and building in the New England region. They are celebrating a recent 10th anniversary, and I'm excited to be included.
If you've found my site through this article, please get in touch! I'd love to hear your thoughts about my artwork, or even discuss a special commission for you.
***One Correction***
On page 44, the correct info is:
I learned to weave at Moore College of Art & Design, as part of the Textile Design program I studied there.

BELATED NEWS!
...for your reading pleasure...
Last Fall there was too much on my plate, and this great news somehow got lost in the crazy shuffle...
Luckily for me, the talented Editor of 'On Your Doorstep' Magazine, Karen Thurman, recently got in touch again, and I was reminded what a beautiful publication she's put together.
Her mission with this endeavor: 'Using Art To Inspire The Protection Of Nature', which is something I can support wholeheartedly!
I feel very fortunate to have had a few pages featuring my artwork in an article last fall. Click Here to Read Issue 2. (pages 38-45)
She's also gone on to publish Issue 3 and Issue 4, and is gearing up to publish Issue 5 next month. There is a lot of inspiration in these pages - Please check them out!
And Enjoy!
I'm so very grateful to Joe Pitcher, one of the co-founders of the website TextileArtist.org, who invited me to participate in another article on their inspirational website.
My work was featured alongside five other contemporary textile artists in a feature focused on creating texture and pattern with stitch.
The other talented artists who I'm honored to share the page with are:
Cas Holmes, Emily Jo Gibbs, Richard McVetis, Evelin Kasikov, and Hilary Ellis.
In the article, each artist discusses how they use embroidery to create texture, pattern and line in their art. Each artist has a highly distinctive visual vocabulary and the ability to surprise the viewers of their work.
To compliment the article, Joe narrates a wonderful video and I believe you can also download a .pdf file from there as well. So exciting!!!!
Click Here to read the article and View the Video!
I'm so thankful to Daniel Crowder of TextileArtist.org for inviting me to write for them again. Thank you, Daniel!!
This time the article is for their series called Art That Inspires, where they invite artists share five works of art that have been inspirational to them/ their work.
If you haven't visited TextileArtist.org before, it's totally worth exploring!
There's a wealth of inspiring and informative articles for textile artists there. Please check their whole site here
...and please read about the Art that inspires me here!

Of Land & Local: Watershed
September 29 - October 23, 2016
Opening Reception: Thursday, September 29, 5-8pm
Exhibiting artists at Shelburne Farms:
Cameron Davis, John Douglas, Janet Fredericks, Brenda Garand, Karen Henderson, Rachel Moore, Jen Morris, Erika Senft Miller, Michael Zebrowski
Now entering its fourth year, Of Land and Local: Watershed continues its commitment to the creation of new work through site-specific and place-based art making as well as community programming that encourages critical dialogue.
This coming August marks five years since Tropical Storm Irene hit Vermont. Water, as both ecological fact and metaphor, will be the subject of this year’s Of Land & Local. Here in Vermont, while the effects of agriculture and climate change experienced in the Champlain Basin and traumatic flooding continue to reinforce our need for water resiliency, our lakes, rivers, and snow also represent the beauty and leisure that is an important element of the Vermont identity and economy. This increasing awareness highlights the complicated place water has in our world; both its necessity for sustaining life and the destructive power of water are overwhelmingly present in the history and future of Vermont.
Exhibiting artists at the BCA Center in Burlington's 'Of Land & Local: Watershed' are:
Sean Clute, Cameron Davis, Al Larsen, Rachel Moore, Michael Zebrowski
This exhibit runs from October 7, 2016 through January 14, 2017, with an Opening Reception Oct. 7th, from 5-8pm

Artist Interview
Daniel Crowder from TextileArtist.org was kind enough to invite me to do an artist interview. The TextileArtist website was founded by Joe and Sam Pitcher, who were inspired to a great appreciation of textile art through their mother, Sue Stone.
The site is an active and lively hub of inspiration, articles, resources, and a wonderful place
for textile and fiber artists to promote their work. What an honor to be included!

This Is Very Exciting News Indeed!
This month of March I have been moving into a New Studio Space outside my home - where I don't need to be concerned about messy art materials when creating with my dyes and paints and yarns and threads and inks and all that fun stuff...
It's located at The Center For Arts and Learning (CAL) in Montpelier. A few years ago, some business entities in our area joined together to form a creative center in a building that once served as a dormitory for the Catholic nuns of the Church of St. Anthony.
As CAL, it is home to member organizations such as The Monteverdi Music School, The Summit School, The T.W. Wood Gallery, and several businesses and artists/writers/musicians studios. I'm really excited to be there!
Artwork Selected for Publication
The Mud Season Review is an international literary journal run by members of the Burlington Writers Workshop, a free writing workshop based in Vermont. They publish monthly: one story, one substantial poem or portfolio of poems, one essay or piece of narrative nonfiction, and visual art.
The online journal showcases these individual works and their authors for a full month, by featuring interviews with the authors, inviting them to read their work, and offering them a virtual place within our workshop community. Print journals began in April 2015.
With Thanks to the Mud Season Review Staff, two of my pieces: Willing and Peripheral, have been published in conjunction with this month's Issue #18 Fiction feature piece "How I Found God in the Laudromat" by author Sam Gridley.

Upcoming Artist Residency
I'm honored to have been awarded a partial Merit Scholarship to attend an Artist Residency this winter at the Vermont Studio Center, in Johnson, VT.
The Vermont Studio Center is the largest international residency program in the US, hosting more than 50 visual artists and writers each month from across the country and around the world.
Back in 2011, I was fortunate to attend their Vermont Artists' Week, which is their program for local artists here in VT to attend in the springtime every year. It was one of the best experiences I've ever had, and I've been hoping to attend a longer residency there ever since. I couldn't find a winter photo of the campus, but I'll be sure to take some while I'm there and add them to my blog!

Radio Interview
The Listening Shires
Marble House Project Artists Jeannette Ehlers and Karen Henderson were interviewed by
WBTN Radio host Thomas Lawrence Toscano of The Listening Shires program
on radio station 1370AM out of Bennington, VT.
While this interview happened in late August 2015, I'm really pleased to share it now, albeit belatedly!
It was an honor to be a guest alongside Jeannette, and the host, Thomas, is a natural and engaging conversationalist.
With Great Thanks to both Thomas and Sarah for organizing the Interview; I hope you'll enjoy listening!

Film Screening - Art Rental
The Burlington Film Society is screening the Norwegian film Louder Than Bombs this Thursday, Thursday evening, Nov. 19th, at 7pm at the Main Street Landing Performing Arts Center.
The film stars Gabriel Byrne, Amy Ryan, Jesse Eisenberg and David Strathairn, among others, and was directed by Norwegian filmmaker Joachim Trier.
I'm very hopeful that you will be able to catch glimpses of my fiber work in the background of some of the scenes - I've yet to see it, so don't know if they were used in the final cut. Here's hoping!
In any case, the film has received much critical acclaim (Cannes Film Festival 2015, Nominated for Palme d’Or / Norwegian International Film Festival 2015, Won Norwegian Film Critics Award / and Stockholm Film Festival 2015, Nominated for Bronze Horse, Best Film) and I'm really excited it's been screened nearby here...Hope you can make it out to see it!
*Note After Screening: You Can Catch Glimpses of Both 'Source' and 'Peripheral' in the film. YAY!*

Artist Residency
I am thrilled to have my proposal accepted for an Artist Residency at The Quarry at Marble House Project in Dorset, VT.
In late August / early September, I will spend almost three weeks there among other artists who all work in different disciplines. We will all share the historic home together, and each have studio spaces that are on the property to pursue our artwork in.
My proposal is to work more with mixed media techniques in conjunction with my textiles, and finding new ways of incorporating them together. I hope to also bring some fiber pieces that are in progress, as well as the materials to play with mono-prints. I am also hoping to just soak in the environment there, and see what it inspires....Whatever comes of it, I feel much gratitude for this gift of time and space!

I'm so pleased to share great news that The University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington, VT has acquired two additional pieces of my fiber/mixed media artwork for their permanent art collection, for the Mothers and Babies Wing.
The pieces are "Meadow"(shown left), and "Early Spring" (shown below).

The pieces are "Meadow"(shown left), and "Early Spring" (shown below).
They are two examples of how I work either using a more abstract interpretation of landscape, or a more recognizable approach.
I wouldn't call those pieces realistic really, but neither are they abstract...I guess it just means there are so many variations on a theme that can be explored -- really as far as the imagination has room to go.
This certainly starts the year off on a really great note, and I'm grateful to the wonderful people at BCA who made it possible.

Artwork Used on Feature Film Set!
I am SO EXCITED to share news that this past fall, two of my landscape inspired fiber wall pieces were used on the set of the feature length film "Louder than Bombs".
The movie is directed by Joachim Trier, an award winning Norwegian director and writer. Starring Gabriel Bryne, Jesse Eisenberg, Rachel Brosnahan, and Isabelle Huppert, among others, it is scheduled to release sometime in 2015.
Here's hoping we'll get more than a glimpse of the pieces once all the editing is done!

Art Rental to "Do No Harm" TV set design
Several of my fiber art pieces were used recently on the set of a new TV show being developed by NBC (!) It's entitled "Do No Harm", and it's being filmed in Philadelphia, PA. It tells the story of Dr. Jason Cole, a brilliant young neurosurgeon, who battles with a dangerous alter personality named Ian Price. A modern day Dr. Jekyl /Mr. Hyde! It stars Steven Pasquale, Alana de la Garza, and Phylicia Rashad, among others. It will premier in January 2013, so stay tuned. I was told they might be in a scene of a coffee shop/gallery type location. I'm so excited they found my work online!

Full Circle at the Kent Museum
September 28 – October 7, 2012
at Historic Kents' Corner
Old West Church Road Calais, VT
This exhibit coincides with American Craft Week, The Vermont Craft Council's Open Studio Weekend, and Calais' Fall Foliage Festival. The show will focus on materials and themes that take either a substance or an image literally full circle. Whether in concept or in product use, these works will promote notions of recycling, reusing and returning to an original point. Combinations of raw materials, objects and traditional art materials will be emphasized, giving new artistic life to otherwise everyday, found, natural or practical items. Cycles on many levels will be explored and referenced.
In addition to the exhibition, they will also be hosting a Silent Auction of art work at the museum as a fundraiser for CERF+ (Craft Emergency Relief Fund and Artist Emergency Resources). CERF+'s mission is to safeguard and sustain the careers of craft artists and provide emergency resources that benefit all artists. at Historic Kents' Corner

Private Commission
I had the great privilege to create a special piece this winter. What a wonderful project! It was based on a specific place that is very personal to the owner. I was able to visit the place with her, and take some photos. It was different to contemplate a place that had meaning for someone else, and try to connect with what resonates for another person...and then be able to bring that out into the work.
The resulting work is entitled "Reflection". Here is the original photo, and the final piece. (you can also find this in my gallery, with a detail image to show the layers of woven cloth, layered silks, and stitching up close.

Hospital Commission
I'm honored that The Banner Ironwood Medical Center in Arizona commissioned me to create a special piece for them. After learning what they were looking for, proposing sketches and providing some samples, we decided on what the piece would look and feel like. And then the process was underway!
As I worked on this piece "Hope" the past three months, I gave a lot of thought to the many things people need to visit a medical center or a hospital for. Knowing from personal family experience, it can range from happy reasons to scary reasons...either planned, sudden or chronic...but for many visits/stays for care, they seem to share some aspect of hope…so that's what I decided to call this piece. And I hope it can uplift people, bring a sense of peace and calm to their reception area.
"Hope" is created from hand woven linen, silk and silk/stainless steel, with linen and silk organza; dye painting, acrylic, with machine and hand stitching.

Vermont Studio Center Residency
In April, I was excited and so fortunate to be able to participate for the first time in Vermont Artists' Week at the Vermont Studio Center in Johnson, VT. It was a wonderful one week artists residency where I was able to enjoy a large studio to work in, delicious food, and the inspiration of an active center with 66 other artists and writers on retreat. Here's some photos:

Inside Out Studio
Since I love to make ALL kinds of things, not just my wall art, my Inside Out Studio creations are the answer to those artistic impulse questions like: What to do with all the fabric I have, but it doesn't fit in with my landscape inspired work? Patchwork Hats! What to do with my garden-inspired doodles? Block Print T-shirts! and why not put the prints on other things? It's a blast to express all sides of my personality in this way, and use techniques I don't use with my wall art. And as always, sharing it with people is the best part...
If you're visiting Vermont, get in touch to find out if my Inside Out Studio will be at the Capital City Farmers' Market right here in Montpelier. Voted the Best Farmers' Market in New England, it's a great weekly event that's held outside in our adorable little downtown on Saturdays, May-October.

Artwork featured in "Black Swan"
Three of Karen’s evocative textile wall pieces can be seen in an upcoming feature film entitled “Black Swan”. Directed by Darren Aronofsky, the film stars Natalie Portman, Winona Ryder and Mila Kunis. It is a dark psychological thriller set within a ballet production of Swan Lake.

I'm now the SDA rep for Vermont!
We moved to Vermont in the fall of 2008, and this winter of 2010, the position for State Representative for the Vermont members of the Surface Design Assoication became open. I jumped at the chance to volunteer!
I'd joined SDA right after graduating college, since being connected to like-minded artists - even from afar, was important and still is. And I figure it's a great way to give back to an organization who has provided inspiration for me, while getting to meet fiber enthusiasts in my new state.
Plans for a Member's Blog are underway!

Calvin Klein Sample Project
This fall my work was found online by designers at Calvin Klein, and they contacted me to commission some sample fabrics they would consider for their Spring 2010 Women's Line. SO exciting!!!
I received some inspiration references and color swatches from them, and some fabrics to work with which I took the color out and re-dyed to match the color swatches. From all of that, I created several samples with different textures. The idea was that they might create 3 pieces for the line from my fabrics (possibly a jacket, a long coat, and a dress).
The image to the left here show one of my samples. It is dyed, layered, and machine as well as hand-stitched. The fabric was a very open weave structure - leno cloth maybe? anyway, it was fun to work with someone else's (Calvin Klein's!!!) palette and concept.
