In April, I was excited and so fortunate to be able to participate for the first time in Vermont Artists' Week at the Vermont Studio Center in Johnson, VT. It was a wonderful one week artists residency where I was able to enjoy a large studio to work in, delicious food, and the inspiration of an active center with 66 other artists and writers on retreat. Here's some photos:

Some of that work that I'd started during my residency was just shown at the Vermont Quilt Festival in "The Art of Quilt" Exhibit. The show was curated by Pam Druhen, and I was so glad to be included as one of the non-traditional fiber artists. Here's some shots of my work in the exhibit:

Hope, Commission created for The Banner Ironwood Medical Center in Queen Creek, Arizona. 30"w x 36"h. Photo credit: Jim Gallagher.

"As I worked on this most recent piece the past three months, I gave a lot of thought to the many things people need to visit a medical center or a hospital for. Knowing from personal family experience, it can range from happy reasons to scary reasons...either planned, sudden or chronic...but for many visits/stays for care, they seem to share some aspect of hope…so that's what I decided to call this piece. And I hope it can uplift people, bring a sense of peace and calm to their reception area." Hope - Fiber art by Karen Henderson

Three of Karen’s evocative textile wall pieces can be seen in an upcoming feature film entitled “Black Swan”.  Directed by Darren Aronofsky, the film stars Natalie Portman, Winona Ryder and Mila Kunis. It is a dark psychological thriller set within a ballet production of Swan Lake.
The pieces Pink Barn Sunset, Notice, and First Frost with Fog were hung in the apartment of the character played by Natalie Portman.

Will keep you posted when the movie is scheduled to come out later this year!
