Stitch Fest!

Here's what I've been working on lately. It's from the yardage recently woven off.

I've cut &  hemmed them into  five panels (it might end up being 7 -- we'll see...I have the other two ready / waiting...) that I'll combine into one large piece.

So this photo here shows the yarns I  used.  The warp is the hemp on the cone, the weft is that tiny little bundle  -- it's what's left of a flatter silk from Habu Textiles...and the ball of yarn that's almost white is a 60/2 silk that I'm using to stitch with.

The plan is to stitch before & after dyeing...so already I've spent about 30 hrs. stitching, and I'm only on the beginning of the third panel. The foreground shows the back of the piece (backed with linen/cotton) and the  stitching there.  I'm hoping to combine the themes of reflection, ripples, and rain -- if that's possible.   We'll see! it's something I want to try anyway....

Where  does the time go?

I really meant to write in here every week. Alas, time is fleeting!!

Here's a photo from the Reception at the West Windsor Art Center in Princeton Junction, NJ, where the Exhibit "What the Fiber!" is showing until
May 2, 2014.  It was a wonderful turnout - so great to see a community so supportive of the arts!

There were several of the exhibiting artists on hand (including yours truly) who were able to speak a little bit about their work, inspirations, and process. I feel really lucky to be included among such talented artisans!

It was the best weekend!!! I got to visit with family and friends, and then saw some familiar faces that afternoon at the reception, which was such a treat! So happy to have had the chance to catch up with people, and to meet other folks as well.

With such a long winter, it was just so fun to be out and about in the PA/NJ area...especially since it was a sunny, warm 40 to 50 degrees when I was there!

BIG difference between the subzero -19 degrees here in VT last week! brrrrrr
Then we had a really big storm - about 18-20" of snow here in Montpelier!!!
SO beautiful!
...and this week it's snowed another  6" or so over two days this week...

It's a balmy 29 today, and it's snowing again. So Pretty!
Jim took this photo here--what a winter wonderland!

Time to go stitch. Just wanted to check in :)  Thanks for reading!

Woven Yardage

Very exciting progress!!!
Last weekend I was able to finish weaving up the hemp / silk warp, so have about 6 yds. of that to play with, plus another yard or so of two other weft  types that I tried first before deciding to use the silk.

My plan is to make a larger piece...but my practical side starts to argue 'how will you get it into a car' or  'shipping will be so expensive'...so I might do it in panels like 'Flow' but I'm not sure.  I keep sketching and doing the math....

I'd love to see the impact of a larger piece - and that was some of the feedback from people at a recent Artists' Talk at the Textured exhibit at VT Metro Gallery. hmmmm.....it's all good food for thought!

For now anyway, I'm sewing the raw ends of the sections I'm envisioning.  That way all that work won't unravel in the dye baths!!!
